Join us for a special International Women’s Day gathering featuring Gillian Goddard, MD, internist and founder of The Savvy Patient, for an evening centered on women’s health, informed self-advocacy, and restoration.
 
The event will begin with a 45-minute fireside chat and discussion with Dr. Goddard, offering practical insights into hormones, midlife health, and how women can better navigate the medical system. This will be followed by 45 minutes of restorative yoga with Amanda Selwyn, creating space to integrate the conversation through rest and mindful movement.
Dr. Goddard will also share her new book, The Hormone Loop, a guide to understanding how hormones shape our health and how to work with them—not against them.
 
In celebration of the community, Dr. Goddard will donate $1 to Notes in Motion / Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre for every book pre-order made as a result of this event, as well as 10% of every newsletter subscription (annual subscription: $80 or $8/month).

Latin Dance Fundamentals

This open-level class led by Angélica Barbosa, welcomes everyone, from beginners to those with dance experience who want to dive deeper into the fundamentals of Latin styles such as salsa, Merengue and Bachata. We will break down fundamentals of body movement, arm styling, footwork and basic partner work. Throughout the sessions, we’ll enjoy a mix of Latin and international music, combining slow and fast rhythms to challenge memory and physical response. All components of the class are designed to help you develop your personal style by discovering what feels best for your body.

Graham Technique

This open-level Graham Modern class, led by Vera Pagnin, welcomes dancers of all abilities and ages to explore the foundational techniques of Martha Graham’s iconic modern dance style. The class includes a thorough warm-up and floor work with accessible sequences, followed by center exercises, and dynamic movement across the floor, emphasizing breath, shift of the weight, and quality of movement.

Latin Dance Partnering

This open Latin Workshop, led by Angélica Barbosa & Isaac Kerr,  welcomes all to learn the fundamentals of Latin dance and partner work. The workshop will focus on Salsa, with elements of other styles including Merengue and Bachata. Participants will learn the principles of leading and following, rhythm, coordination, and fun steps that can be incorporated into their dance residencies. The class will also include a brief overview of the historical context of Latin dance, fundamental steps, and partner interaction. By the end of the session, participants will learn and practice a short partner sequence.

This open-level Jazz class, led  by Isaac Kerr, shows broad range of Jazz technique and styles, including Musical Theatre, Contemporary Jazz, Comp Jazz, and Classic Jazz. In this class, you will learn Jazz fundamentals, lively jazz progressions, and combinations in an open and inclusive environment. Class will include variations to match individual skill levels.

Standing Down Straight® (SDS) is a voice-and-movement training method developed by Billy Siegenfeld, founder of the theatre company Jump Rhythm®. This approach emphasizes gravity-directed relaxation, allowing individuals to do performative or everyday tasks with reduced strain and heightened efficiency—to find power in relaxation to prevent strain and injury.

Using Jarabe Tapatío as an example, participants will learn an adapted version of the dance and participate in a warm up and creative exploration activity to better understand how to teach different styles in the Notes and Motion teaching model.

Modern Dance Pioneers

Celebrate Dance NYC! This workshop, led by Lindsey Jennings,  unpacked the techniques, aesthetics, and legacies of three iconic NYC Modern Dance Pioneers: Katherine Dunham, Trisha Brown, and Deborah Hay. Participants learned a short historical synopsis of each artists’ life and work before physically embodying some of the fundamentals and techniques that they worked within in their careers. Structured Improv

Participants in this workshop, led by Iren Kaymshev, discovered  the power of movement and rhythm in this workshop blending structured improvisation with live percussion. This class combined improvisational tasks and structured exercises to build comfort, expand dance vocabulary, and respond instinctively to music. Participants explored creativity, develop communication skills, and engage through safe touch, sound, and shared energy. The tools learned can be adapted to any dance practice.

In this worksop, led by Yang Sun, participants learned some iconic K-pop moves followed by choreography involving dynamic tempo and formation changes. Workshop included a brief history about the evolution of K-pop from the 70s to present day, and will cover dance styles from iconic K-pop groups such as Black Pink, BTS, Big Bang, EXO, Red Velvet, and Katseye.

African Dance Forms

In this workshop, led by Kiara Paige participants were immersed in the vibrant energy of West African dance in this dynamic class accompanied by live drumming. Rooted in the rich traditions of West African movement, this class explores the rhythms, cultural significance, and expressive power of traditional dances from regions such as Guinea, Mali, and/or Senegal.With the pulsating beats of a live percussionist guiding each step, students will learn fundamental movements, footwork, and combinations that celebrate the connection between dance and rhythm.

The workshop was structured as a hands-on crash course where participants collaborated to create a short choreographic piece, experimenting with a variety of creative tools in real time.

Eastern Folk Dance

In this workshop, led by Vera Paganin & Haley Yegorov, participants learned the social and cultural significance of dance throughout history in this Eastern Folk Dance workshop. It highlighted dances marking holidays, celebrations, and traditions of various cultures, and unpacked the history of three Eastern Folk dance styles and their impact on our community today.
