This workshop explores swing dance through the lens of Standing Down Straight®—finding power in relaxation and letting gravity do the work. Instead of applying muscular force, we’ll practice: releasing unnecessary tension, organizing around the skeleton, and allowing movement to happen with less effort and more ease. Dancers and non-dancers alike are welcome in this workshop to learn simple swing rhythms and partner movement while applying gravity-directed alignment, shared momentum, and efficient use of energy. Through partner and group exercises, we’ll discover how Standing Down Straight® makes swing dancing feel more sustainable, connected, and joyful.
Billy Siegenfeld is a former jazz and rock drummer and present-day vocal-rhythmic actor-dancer-singer. He’s also the founder, artistic director, choreographer, and musical arranger of the theatre company Jump Rhythm® (www.jumprhythm.org); an Emmy®-Award-winning recipient for both his performances in and vocal-rhythmic choreography for the documentary Jump Rhythm Jazz Project: Getting There; an author of essays, plays, and an upcoming book titled How To Make Gravity Our New Best Friend; and a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence in the Department of Theatre at Northwestern University.

International Women’s Day Event: Fireside chat with Dr. Gillian Goddard & Restorative Yoga with Amanda Selwyn
Join us for a special International Women’s Day gathering featuring Gillian Goddard, MD, internist and founder of The Savvy Patient, for an evening centered on women’s health, informed self-advocacy, and restoration.
The event will begin with a 45-minute fireside chat and discussion with Dr. Goddard, offering practical insights into hormones, midlife health, and how women can better navigate the medical system. This will be followed by 45 minutes of restorative yoga with Amanda Selwyn, creating space to integrate the conversation through rest and mindful movement.
Dr. Goddard will also share her new book, The Hormone Loop, a guide to understanding how hormones shape our health and how to work with them—not against them.
In celebration of the community, Dr. Goddard will donate $1 to Notes in Motion / Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre for every book pre-order made as a result of this event, as well as 10% of every newsletter subscription (annual subscription: $80 or $8/month).
